February witnesses the transition from the Sundays after Epiphany, in some traditions called Ordinary Time, to the Season of Lent. Ordinary Time does not mean that the days are only so-so, but rather not included in a particular liturgical time period. The Sundays have ordinals—numbers attached to them. Ordinalary Time kind of trips on the tongue, so it is shortened. The PCUSA goes back and forth from year to year in calling these days Ordinary Time (which I prefer) to the Sundays after Epiphany…which sounds kind of ordinary to me (Pastor Z).

We move on Ash Wednesday, February 17, to the Season of Lent…which was where we were last year when Covid-19 reared up and bucked us off our ride through the liturgical cycle. Yes, we’ve changed the antependia colors several times since then; but it kind of feels like Lent has lasted a whole year. We have highest hope that at its end Easter Sunday will be accompanied by a sense of relief and recovery from this present plague. No guarantees, however. Just hope.

After January featured different pulpit voices, Pastor Zomermaand’s name fills the preacher slot for several weeks now. That could change as plans for Lent, still in development, take shape.
