Theologian-in-Residence weekend with The Rev. Alex McNeill
October 4 - October 5
Third Church will welcome (virtually!) Rev. Alex McNeill, Executive Director of More Light Presbyterians, October 4-5, in recognition of 40 years of our congregation’s journey to a full welcome to, and advocacy with, LGBTQ+ people.
Rev. Alex Patchin McNeill has served as the Executive Director of More Light Presbyterians since 2013. During his tenure, he has equipped congregations to live into policy change for inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people and has successfully enacted policies for marriage equality in the PC(USA). Under his leadership, More Light now serves as a capacity-building organization, equipping congregations to work intersectionally on justice issues. A trained professional coach through the International Coaching Federation, Alex brings a coaching approach to his work with congregations seeking to follow God’s call to widen their welcome, increase church vitality, or develop and implement new programs. In addition, he coaches leaders taking a leap of faith to launch a new project, step into a leadership role, and discern their calling. Alex is the first openly transgender man ordained as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA). He lives in Asheville, NC with his spouse and their three dogs.

Monday, October 5 at 5:00pm: Christian Faith and LGBT Experience Lecture
Title topic: “Ministry Beyond the Binary”
This will be a Zoom event. Click here for the link.
Young people’s views of gender beyond a binary presents a sea change to the way we understand our identity, community, and theology. The ways youth understand and live into their gender offers rich ground for new ways of being for the Church. Similarly, even some of the Bible’s most celebrated characters defied their culture’s gender norms. In what ways have our practices of ministry been limited by binary approaches, and how might we shift our ministries beyond dualistic thinking towards a vision of an abundant God?
This event is hosted by Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and is a part of their semi-annual Lecture Week. Co-Sponsored by: Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School Women & Gender Studies Program, Community Christian Church, Covenant United Methodist Church, Downtown United Presbyterian Church, Episcopal Church of St Luke and St Simon, Immanuel Baptist Church, Lake Ave Baptist Church, Open Arms Metropolitan Community Church, and Third Presbyterian Church
