Sunday Seminar: Welcoming the Spirit of God

August 6, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 9:45 am

Hospitality and the Stranger: Welcoming the Divine
This four-week Seminar series will respond to videos from The Work of the People. Each video stands alone, so you need not attend the whole series.

In ancient cultures, the stranger was someone to whom hospitality was extended. To welcome the stranger was to welcome the company of the divine. This series of videos is about those we might consider other, stranger, foreigner, and alien. These are the people often on the margins of society, and treated as such. They might be migrants, those who are of different religious or cultural backgrounds, those who live in neighborhoods of different social economic classes, those who simply look, act, and behave differently.

August 6: Welcoming the Spirit of God (Love Distorted)
Theologian Grace Ji Sun Kim challenges us to think of the Spirit of God or the “Spirit God” in order to move beyond images of God that are culturally embedded. Often, our views of God are so shaped by culture and geography that God is no longer God but our figment of our fears, ideologies, limited aspirations, and culture. This limited image of God, then becomes a mythic character in a story that ends not in worship, but idolatry. How can we put these false idols behind?
