Christian Hope and Resistance: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern
This three-week adult education course examines how Christian concepts of hope developed in response to political power, persecution, and moral crisis across three historical periods. We begin with the Book of Revelation, situating it in its first-century imperial context as a text shaped by resistance to Roman domination. The course then turns to the medieval period to consider how Christian thinkers articulated prophetic responsibility, conscience, and obligation within structures of authority and social order. Finally, we examine the theology and life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer as a modern example of Christian resistance under totalitarianism. Across these case studies, the course traces how Christian hope has functioned not as abstraction, but as a historically embedded response to concrete social and political realities.
