World Peacemaking and Mission

What do we do?

1. We continue our focus on the Middle East and the search for peace between Israel and Palestine.



An Interfaith Dialogue Group has been formed with members of Temple B'rith Kodesh and the Islamic Center of Rochester. This group, called Faith to Faith, seeks to include Christian, Jewish, and Muslim perspectives. Its main interest is to seek peace in Israel/Palestine, mainly through education. Our 2007 program: Noa Baum, internationally known storyteller, led a series of youth and adult workshops to help us build bridges of understanding. Ms. Baum also performed "A Land Twice Promised", a compelling performance of Palestinian and Israeli womens' stories.

 

2. A new initiative is underway to develop a mission program in Africa.


Our mission interest is settling upon Kenya. We have been in contact with the Kenya Presbyterian Network, a group of approximately 40 congregations doing a variety of work in Kenya. We hope to learn and to find ways of collaborating with them.


3. We support the Jim Rice Essay Contest for high school students.

4. We campaign on behalf of those imprisoned for their political and religious beliefs by writing letters through Amnesty International.


In 2005, more than 150 letters were sent!


5. We support the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program.


In 2006-2007 Third member Rachel Norton served as a YAV in Nagydrobrony, Ukraine. She worked with the Roma people, an ethnic group that suffers racial discrimination and deep poverty. Rachel established a preschool for Roma children, and acted as a bridge between the Roma and non-Roma communities. Read her letters home here.
