Third Presbyterian Church's Relation to

Auburn Thelogical Seminary

Auburn Theological Seminary was established in the 19th century by the Presbyteries of New York state when the General Assembly refused to do so, telling upstate New Yorkers they should attend Princeton Seminary. Auburn has educated many outstanding ministers, including our own David Moody. In 1939 it moved to NYC to associate with Union Theological Seminary, taking its faculty there, assuming responsibility for Presbyterian students at Union, teaching Presbyterian polity and helping them find pastorates on graduation. It also offers programs of Continuing Thelogical Education for both clergy and laity of many faith traditions. It remains a seminary of the Presbyteries, related by covenant agreement to the General Assembly but receiving no financial support from the national Presbyterian Church.

Several Auburn faculty have visited Third. President Barbara Wheeler has served as a Hudnut preacher and was principal speaker at an all Elder dinner. Walter Wink, a Professor of New Testament, and former President Robert Lynn were Theologians-in-Residence here.

Over the years Third Church ministers and Elders have served on the Auburn Board of Trustees: David Mooney, William Young, James Stewart, and Beth Struever. Third has also made yearly gifts to Auburn since the time of Dr. Hudnut's ministry. Our warm relationship with Auburn has been to the mutual benefit of both.
