Itinerary:

The tour is designed to provide maximum flexibility for both new and seasoned travelers. During the week in London, most days and evenings will be free - to allow participants to select whatever attractions they wish to see. Choir members, of course, will be required to be at the cathedral at a specific time in the afternoon for rehearsal and the evensong service. A 7-day unlimited travel pass for the London underground and busses (zones 1-2) is included in tour price, to help us easily navigate London. Ample suggestions for sight seeing and attractions will be provided to help in our planning both before and during the tour.

On Thursday of our week in London, a private coach will take us the village of Ely, about 90 minutes from London. There the choir will present a midday concert in the cathedral’s Lady Chapel, noted for its acoustics. According to the Ely Cathedral website, “The Lady Chapel has a 7 second echo, and choirs from all over the world visit each summer to sing in its unique atmosphere.”

During the second week of the tour, a private coach will transport us through northern England and into Scotland. We will spend time in the historic cities of Cambridge (home of the University of Cambridge and King’s College Chapel) and York (with its medieval walled city and York Minister - “The largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe”). While in York, the choir will be privileged to participate in a private workshop with composer and choral conductor Andrew Carter.

Then on to Edinburgh, with guided coach day trips available to the Scottish highlands, Lochs, golf courses, and castles. On Thursday, the choir will present a noontime concert in the home church of John Knox, historic St. Giles’ Cathedral, on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. On Friday, our last evening together, we will attend the opening night of the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, set against the backdrop of historic Edinburgh Castle.

Details:

The tour will be open to Choir Members, families, and friends. Singing Choir Members must be at least 16 years old. In order to be familiar with the music being sung during the tour, singers on the tour must be a regular member of the Chancel Choir (beginning in September, 2004). Non-choir members (associates) are welcome on the tour as long as space is available Associates must be at least 12 years old (below college age must be accompanied by a non-singing adult guardian).   [See the full Guidelines for Associate Participation]

Choir Members will be able to participate in fund raising activities leading up to the tour, which can help to offset some of the cost of their tour package. (Funds raised by the choir will offset a portion of the costs for Choir Members, in proportion to their participation in fund raising activities. Tour Associates will pay the full package price.)   [See the full Guidelines for Fundraising]

The price of the tour is expected to be $2900 - 3200 per person, double occupancy. Accommodations are expected to be “3-star” or better, and should be centrally located to the cities we are visiting. Travel arrangements are being provided locally by Lila Ford of Gallery of Travel, who will be able to work individually with travelers who want to book extended travel either before or after the tour, or to help in arranging for theatre tickets, optional excursions, etc. during the tour.
