Church School Fall Mission Project
Cameron Community Ministries is organizing a collection of school supplies this year for teachers at School #30 on Otis Street. All are invited to bring in supplies to support this project.
All supplies will be collected on Rally Day, Sunday September 9th, at the Children’s Ministry Committee table.

This special post-Christmas performance will feature many of the pieces that Derrick, Herb, and Peter performed in their recent recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The program features music by Bach and Handel, as well as carol and folk song settings by Alfred Burt, Jake Heggie, Philip Maue, and John Ness Beck. Also featured will be two pieces specially composed by Herb Smith, including the Rochester premiere of his “The 12 Tones of Christmas”.

Come and enjoy some post-holiday music making in the beauty of the Third Church sanctuary, following the 10:45 worship service that day.

Make the Advent Potluck and “Ring and Sing” part of your holiday activities this year! It is sure to be a fun and refreshing evening of music, featuring the Third Church Ringers, Freedom Ringers and Chapel Bells! Bring a dish to pass that serves eight: main dishes, salads, vegetables and desserts are needed. At 7:00pm, join us for the Advent “Ring and Sing.” This festive service will feature Christmas Carols performed by the bell choirs, as well as a time for carol singing by the congregation.

Chapel Concert

The second concert in the 2006-2007 series of Chapel Concerts by Candlelight gives us an unusual opportunity to hear a music for clavichord as Ulrika Davidsson performs a program entitled “Sweet Sounds from the Clavichord,” including music by Bach, Haydn and Henneberg. Ulrika has concertized throughout Europe as well as in the U.S., and has presented recitals and lectures at several international conferences. She teaches keyboard technique at the Eastman School of Music and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in piano and early keyboards at the Eastman School of Music under Barry Snyder and William Porter.

There is no admission charge; an offering will be received to support future concerts. Invite your friends to join you for this unusual opportunity. This series is made possible in part by the Janet S. and David B. Reed Fund.

World AIDS Day
“Keep the Promise” Prayer Service to Commemorate World AIDS Day
Sunday, December 3, 7:00pm in the Sanctuary
A special prayer service will be held in the Third Church sanctuary in conjunction with the world campaign to stop AIDS. Wade Norwood, Director, Safety Net Initiatives of the Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency will deliver a reflection. The worship service is sponsored by 35 church and community groups, including Third Presbyterian Church.

We'll prepare gift bags for RAIHN families. Please bring items to decorate the bags or items to fill the bags. Items to fill the bag can include candy, personal-sized lotions and soaps, crayons, markers or other small items. We'll also collect cash to purchase socks and underwear once we know the families we will be helping. When we are done with the bags, we'll relax over treats (sweet and savory) and enjoy each other's company. We'll also collect items and cash Sundays in December or you can get items to Candice Lucas (473-4769) or Jenny Hutkowski (264-1157).


Thanksgiving Day Interfaith Service

The service, originated in 1874, is the oldest such service in the country. It is a beacon of hope for peace, cooperation and understanding for people of all faiths. Third Church will again participate in the service. All are welcome.

Peter DuBois in Concert

Director of Music/Organist of Third Church for the past fifteen years, Peter DuBois will perform a recital of music by J.S. Bach, Marcel Dupré, César Franck, Maurice Duruflé and Paul Hindemith on the 4-manual Austin organ in the Sanctuary. Peter has performed extensively in the United States and abroad. In addition to his duties at Third Church, he serves on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music part time, as Assistant Professor of Sacred Music, and Director of the Sacred Music Diploma. EROI Community Organ Recital

Concert for All Saints'
As noted in last month’s Messenger, the Chancel Choir will be presenting major works this year outside of the usual liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent.

The first of these will be the presentation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s monumental Requiem as a memorial Concert for All Saints’ on Sunday, October 29, with the members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and others. Portions of the Requiem will be sung in worship at 10:45am that morning, and a full concert performance, along with other anthems appropriate for All Saints’, will be presented that evening at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary. In order to hear the complete Requiem, we encourage you to return for the full concert performance, and invite friends and neighbors to join you! You won’t want to miss either wonderful performance.

Major funding for this presentation is provided by a gift to the glory of God and in memory of Karen Holmes and George Jones. A Special Music offering will be received to support additional expenses of this event, and presentations of other major works.

Linda C. Loving will present Julian, a dramatic monologue based on the life and times of Julian of Norwich and her written work, Revelations of Divine Love. Mystic, writer, spiritual guide, Julian is the first-known English woman whose written work survives. In the midst of great turmoil, Julian spoke words of comfort, of hope, of forgiveness, of revelation. She speaks to our time as well.

Linda Loving is an actress, writer, and ordained Presbyterian minister. She brings to the role of Julian a combined background in theater and theology. She has given over sixty performances of “Julian of Norwich” around the country and at Julian’s Shrine in Norwich, England.

Books, Books, Books IT’S BACK!
Third Church’s Third Annual Book Sale
Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6 in the Celebration Center
HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1) DONATE your “in-good-condition” used books (NO FOREIGN LANGUAGE BOOKS, TEXTBOOKS, MEDICAL BOOKS or MAGAZINES). Books may be dropped off from June 19-July 14 in the office (in the “book bin”) or in the Education Building (lower level, second door on the right). From July 14—July 26, books may be dropped off in the office or in the fireplace end of the Celebration Center.

2) VOLUNTEER in one or more ways: a) pre-sort books on a Sunday in July; b) help “set-up” in the Celebration Center on Friday, August 4; c) be a cashier at the sale on Saturday or Sunday; d) help with “take-down” on Monday, August 7. Most importantly, come to the sale and buy lots of books!

Gerre Hancock, organist, in recital at Third Church

Friday, August 4 at 8:00pm
World-renowned organist and improviser Gerre Hancock will perform an organ recital in the sanctuary of Third Church on Friday, August 4 at 8:00pm as part of the Eastman School of Music's IMPROVFest. The program is FREE and open to the public. Dr. Hancock was for many years Organist and Choirmaster at New York's St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue, and since retiring from there in 2004, is serving with his wife on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. Come and hear this legendary musician perform.

Daily themes will include: God’s Rule Book (The Ten Commandments); Do the Right Thing (Daniel); The Golden Rule (The Good Samaritan) and From Rules to Grace (Story of Zacchaeus).

Choral Evensong
Sunday, June 4, at 4:00pm in the Sanctuary

The Chancel Choir will present a Service of Choral Evensong, followed by a reception in Johnston Hall. This 45-minute service of scripture, prayer and music, based on traditions observed in the Anglican church for many centuries, will feature some of the music the choir prepared for its last tour in England and Scotland, as well as the wonderful new anthem, Seek him that maketh the seven stars by Jonathan Dove. Other composers represented include, Charles V. Stanford, Richard Shephard, Sir John Stainer, and mystical Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. This evensong will also mark the last time that Assistant Organist Matthew Brown will be accompanying the Choir.

Qabats Picnic

All Qabats families are invited to join us for our Qabats end of year picnic on Sunday, June 4 at noon in the celebration center. We will take time to thank our leaders, send off our 6th graders, and enjoy some fellowship together. It is our plan to distribute copies of the “Oh Jonah!” DVD at the picnic as well.

We will provide the hot dogs and lemonade, we are asking families with last names beginning with letters A-M to bring salads, and families with last names beginning with letters N-Z to bring desserts. See you on the 4th!

Peter DuBois in Recital at The Memorial Art Gallery

Peter DuBois will perform a Showcase Recital on the recently installed Italian Baroque Organ in the Herdle Fountain Court at the Memorial Art Gallery on Sunday May 21 at 5:30pm. The program will feature music by Frescobaldi, Merulo and several other Italian and European composers from the 16th and 17th centuries. Tickets are $12 (students $8) and will be available at the door.

Music Recognition Sunday

This service is the annual celebration and recognition of the many persons who participate in the music ministry of Third Church, and serves as the culmination of the year's program for children's youth, and handbell choirs. Several of the musical groups will participate as we celebrate the talent and dedication of so many persons in our congregation sharing their gifts to the glory of God.


CHANCEL CHOIR brings CHORAL EVENSONG to CITY CHURCH

at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 923 Portland Avenue

On Sunday, May 7 at 4:00pm, the Chancel Choir has been invited to sing a Service of Choral Evensong at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church at 923 Portland Avenue in the city as a part of their series, Music at St. Andrew’s. The service will include Plainchant canticles, and choral music by Hans Leo Hassler, Richard Sheppard, Bobby McFerrin and Samuel Barber. Readings and prayers will be led by clergy from both Third Church and St. Andrew. The church on Portland Avenue is a beautiful worship space with glorious acoustics, and has been lovingly restored by the faith community there. Please come and support the choir – and the parish of St. Andrew – as together we affirm our mutual goals of bringing beauty to the city.


Crop Walk

YOUTH FLOWER SALE!
On Sundays through May 7, the youth of Third Church will be selling annuals (geraniums, impatiens and vinca) during coffee hour after 10:45 worship, for planting over the Memorial Day Weekend. Proceeds from the sale will be used for this year’s Senior High Mission Trip to “The Meeting Ground” in Elkton, Maryland in July, as well as to assist church youth in paying for retreats and other youth activities.

Flowers which are ordered may be picked up on Sunday, May 28 after the service.


Third Church Youth Ensembles in CONCERT!

The youth of our church will present a free concert of music they have prepared throughout the year for our enjoyment and inspiration. It will include festive and reflective anthems sung by the Covenant Singers, and wonderful pieces performed by the Junior High Bells and Covenant Ringers. Everyone is invited to join us for this great celebration of the talent that our youth have been given and that they will share with us.

Interfaith Dialogue Event at Monroe Community College

A compelling series of real-life stories from the point of view of both Israeli and Palestinian women will be presented at Monroe Community College. The program, A Land Twice Promised, is presented in story form by Israeli storyteller Noa Baum, who will alternately play the role of an Israeli and Palestinian woman. Special Radio Broadcast On Katrina Relief Trip

WXXI-AM 1370 Radio will broadcast a special program that includes the experiences of Third Church's Katrina Relief Volunteers.

Rebuilding Hope: Rochester Reaches Out to the Gulf Coast brings together the reports that were filed by Jeanne Fisher and conversations with former Mayor William Johnson, who spent a week in Mississippi's Gulf Coast region.

Rebuilding Hope will be broadcast on Saturday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. on WXXI-AM 1370 and will be rebroadcast on Monday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.


Special Music for Lent – Requiem by John Rutter

Third Churchers of all ages (children, youth, adults) are encouraged to participate in a Lenten gathering on Sunday, March 19. We will gather in the Celebration Center at 5:45 p.m. Dinner time is 6:00 p.m. This will be a true potluck, so bring a dish to share. We will enjoy some community building activities during dinner, and then move to a time of contemplative, interactive worship, which will conclude at 7:30 p.m.

Lent is an important season for connecting -- we hope that many from all ages and family configurations will be present for this time of fellowship and spiritual nurture. To assist us in planning, please RSVP to the church office (271-6513) by March 17.


 

Chapel Concert by Candlelight

This is your last chance this season to experience the beauty and intimacy of early music performed in the wonderful acoustic of our chapel. This popular series of Chapel Concerts by Candlelight has attracted between 75 and 100 people for each of the first three programs. The final program in the series for this season will present “Music for Violin and Basso continuo.” Music by Pietro Paolo Melij, Biagio Marini, Dario Castello, Arcangello Corelli and others. Please join us for this unique opportunity, and invite your friends to join you.

This series has been made possible in large part through the generosity of gifts to the David B. Reed Program Fund. Donations will be accepted to provide support for this and future concerts.

Alma College Choir in Concert
Friday, March 3, 7:30 p.m.
We are pleased to host a concert by the Alma College Choir from Michigan on Friday, March 3. The 7:30 p.m. concert is open to the public and all are kindly invited to attend. A free-will offering will be received to help support the expenses of the choir’s tour.

The Alma Choir, Michigan’s Presbyterian college choir, has been performing across the United States and around the world for more than 70 years. In the past ten years they have sung in more than 150 American cities. This, however, will be their first performance in Rochester in more than 25 years.

Choir director Will Nichols says the Alma College singers are aware of the fine choral tradition in Rochester and know that “bringing a choir to Rochester is like carrying coals to Newcastle,” but nevertheless look forward to singing for a knowledgeable audience that feels as they do about good music and good singing.

Mardi Gras Pancake Supper

Not quite as wild as dancing in the streets, but great fun for all ages! On the Tuesday evening before Lent begins (February 28, in 2006), we gather in the Celebration Center for a pancake supper. The Meigs Street Ramblers greet us with their live, rousing Dixieland jazz. Jay Stetzer will provide after dinner entertainment with his entertaining, participatory and educational program. Jay directs the award-winning performing arts program for elementary students at the Harley School. If you’ve never been to Mardi Gras at Third, this is the year to be there! Mark your calendars now. Meigs Street Ramblers begin rehearsals

The Meigs Street Ramblers will organize again this year to provide Dixieland music for the Mardi Gras pancake dinner on Tuesday, February 28, 2005. The band is looking for trumpets, trombones, tenor sax, clarinet, drums, tuba or bass and banjo. Players of high school age and older are welcome. Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival

Our biennial Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival will once again be the culmination of our celebration of Christmas and Epiphany. Dating back to 14th century England, this festival procession includes much pageantry, thrilling music by the choir, and much carol singing by choir and audience, accompanied by organ and instruments. The two performances will each be followed by a reception hosted by the royal court, and full of goodies which include plenty of mince tarts, plum pudding, and a wassail bowl! It is an event to which we invite the entire Rochester community, so spread the word, and invite your friends and neighbors to join you for this beautiful and fun festival. A free-will offering will be received at the door. (Suggested donation is $10/adults; $5/children; or $25/family)
