Antependia display now on the church website:
If you missed the recent display of needlepoint antependia
(pulpit hangings) in the Third Church Gallery, you may find pictures
and complete information about them on the church website at www.thirdpresbyterian.org/music/liturgicalneedlework.
This wonderful web page was assembled by Bob Parrett, and includes
information about the designers, stitchers, symbolism and dedication
information for each of the beautiful pieces of needlepoint. Additional
features of the page include information on the wedding kneeler, and
the bench in the columbarium, as well as the complete text of an adult
education talk given several years ago on the topic of Third Church's
antependia, given by Helen Meyer. Check it out, as the antependia
begin with the season of Advent, and continue to refer to it as we
move through the Liturgical Year.
Special Music for Advent
Magnificat, BWV 243 by J.S. Bach
December 18 at 10:45 am in the Sanctuary
The Chancel Choir, Soloists, and Orchestra under the direction
of Peter DuBois will present J. S. Bach’s masterpiece Magnificat,
BWV 243, in our morning worship on Sunday, December 18 at 10:45 a.m.
as the special music offering for Advent. This exuberant setting of
the traditional vespers canticle from the first chapter of Luke’s
gospel is one of Bach’s most joyful works. It was written for
his first Christmas as Cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1723,
and our presentation of it will include the rarely-performed additional
movements on Christmas texts that he composed for that occasion. The
five-part chorus and soloists are accompanied by an orchestra of strings,
trumpets, flutes, oboes and timpani.
This presentation is made possible in large part by generous gifts
given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Elizabeth
K. Crawford, long-time member of Third Church who died
in February 2004. A special music offering will also be received on
December 18 to make future music presentations possible, which are
funded entirely outside the operating budget. Your generosity is appreciated.
Plan to be present for this special presentation in worship, meant
to enrich our experience leading to the celebration of Christ’s
birth. Invite a friend to join you!
Advent Lectionary
Four Thursdays in Advent (December 1, 8, 15, 22) at 12:00

This course will trace the trajectory of the classical Bible
texts of the Advent Season. The preaching in Advent will follow Isaiah
64:1-9; 40:1-11; 61:1-11; II Samuel 7:1-11. The Isaiah texts focus
on Isaiah of the Restoration, after the Exile in Babylon. All the
texts concern themselves with God’s promise of covenant faithfulness
in tough times. The studies will be led by John Wilkinson, Deborah
Hughes and Roderic Frohman.

you are encouraged to bring it along to re-use it this year.

Katrina School Kits
Sunday, October 30
Church World Service indicates that school kits are needed for children
in the areas affected by the recent hurricanes. We are asking each
class to bring in a different item. At the end of October (Sunday,
October 30) we will gather in the Celebration center to assemble the
kits and prepare them for mailing. Our goal is to collect 200 school
kits. This means that for many of the items that we need, it would
be helpful for children to bring in multiples. The items needed and
the classes responsible for each item are listed below:
• large erasers (nursery)
• blunt-tip scissors (3 year olds, pre-school, and 4th grade)
• pencil sharpeners (kindergarten)
• new pencils with erasers (1st grade)
• a variety of colors of construction paper (2nd grade)
• pads or notebooks of paper with 150-200 sheets per pad (3rd
grade)
• box of 24 crayons (5th grade)
• 12”x14” cloth bag with cloth handles and a button,
snap or Velcro closure (6th grade and any others who are able to sew
bags)

Third Church Hymn-A-Thon!!!
Saturday, June 18 at 9:00am
As the final fund-raising event for this summer’s tour to England
and Scotland, the Chancel Choir will be performing an all-day Hymn-A-Thon
in the Sanctuary on Saturday, June 18, beginning at 9:00am.
Members of the choir will be singing in shifts all the way through
The Presbyterian Hymnal – from Hymn #1 through Hymn #564 –
all day long! You are invited to drop in at any point and join in
the singing…
Ways you can help support the event:
* PLEDGE your support in one of several ways:
*see any choir member, or visit the pledge table in Johnston Hall
after worship on Sundays to make a pledge per hymn sung. (i.e. $.05
per hymn = $28.20, $.10 per hymn = $56.40, etc.)
* you may choose to dedicate one or more hymns to be sung in honor
or in memory of someone. Each dedication will cost $50, and the donor
will receive a certificate recognizing the dedication, AND a guarantee
that all verses of that hymn will be sung! Get those dedications in
early…the most popular hymns are likely to go fast!
* Make a flat donation to the Hymn-A-Thon either at the pledge table,
by contacting any choir member, or by mailing it to the church, 4
Meigs St, Rochester, NY 14607, and marking your check “Hymn-A-Thon.”
* COME AND SING with us for any part of the day on June 18, beginning
at 9:00am. It will be a fun and novel way to help the choir, AND you’ll
inevitably get to sing some old favorite hymns as well as explore
some of the unsung treasures in our hymnal! Come and join the fun!For
more information abou the Hymn-A-Thon, contact David Gregory at dstargreg@yahoo.com
or 944-5830.

Music and Worship Recognition Sunday, May 8, 2005
Sunday morning we will celebrate the talent, dedication and
commitment of the many children, youth and adults who have participated
in the worship ministry of Third Church this year through vocal choirs,
handbell choirs and worship preparation. We thank them all for sharing
their gifts in the leadership of our worship of God. We recognize
Sixth Graders graduating from the Junior Choir into the Covenant Singers
and bell programs. And, we congratulate those high school seniors
graduating from the youth music programs. Finally, we express our
deepest thanks to the many parents, grandparents, and other congregation
members who have provided support in countless ways throughout the
year.
Third Presbyterian Church has a rich heritage of worship; music has
always played a significant part in helping this congregation celebrate
and sense God's presence. In addition, there are many, many others
who have enriched our worship experience through their participation
planning worship components, greeting, ushering, and serving as acolytes.
