Guidelines For Faith Development

The following guidelines have been developed by Children's Ministry Sub-committee as markers for the faith development of our children. It is our hope that parents will review these guidelines and talk to their children about their learning experiences in our Church school. Awareness of these principles, understanding of certain Bible passages, name recognition of Biblical leaders, and familiarity with our worship practices are cornerstones in the development of Christian faith. With that thought in mind, we have identified what it is that we want our children to know as they progress through each grade.

Sixth Grade

By the end of the 6th grade, a young person should know:

  • How to use a Bible concordance
  • How to categorize kinds of writings in the Bible (law, history, poetry, prophecy)
  • How the Bible was formed
  • The Apostle's Creed
  • Denominational history: John Calvin, John Knox, etc.
  • How to explain the Trinity
  • The story of Jesus' life
  • Ways to be active in service activities and faithful giving
  • Understand that decisions made about how we use our time, develop our talents and spend money should reflect the will of God
  • The story of Acts to the present – the Church

SCRIPTURE:

  • Psalm 121
  • 1 Corinthians 13
  • Galatians 5:22-23 (fruits of the spirit)
  • Galatians 3:28
