The
Board of Deacons is an ordained body of officers elected
by the congregation to assist in the care of members and
friends of Third Church. The Board worked closely with Deborah
Hughes, Interim Associate Pastor for Congregational Care
and Parish Visitor Pamela Foye, and we are grateful for
their support, care, and commitment over the past year.
In addition to visiting hospitalized members, preparing
and delivering meals to homebound members, helping with
child care for ill members and offering care and hospitality
to all, the following are highlights of our ongoing
work:
Hospitality Ministry Nancy Adams and Cecil Buchinger,
co-leaders
• Copied tapes of the Sunday service each week
and delivered the tapes, chancel flowers and roses marking
births and deaths to members in the hospital, recovering
at home, or experiencing life changing events
• Coordinated by Susan Fox, supported the Feasting
on Friendship freezer ministry to provide meals for
shut-ins and members recovering at home.
Parish Ministry Seasson Phillips and Anne Sievers,
co-leaders
• Assigned deacons to each parish.
• Supported parish gatherings held by individual
or combined parishes
• Scheduled deacons for all coffee hours.
• Encouraged participation by parish members
to assist with coffee hour baking and serving.
• Updated the Deacon Bulletin Board with current
deacons and parishes.
Youth Ministry Hope Herting, leader
• Organized care packages in March and November
for our freshman college students with special hand written
notes to remind them that they remain connected to Third
Church.
• Organized and offered a brunch in June for graduating
high school seniors to wish them well and thank them for
their contributions to Third Church.
Prayer and Spiritual Life Ministry Camille Clayton and
Evelyn Roland, co-leaders
• Recruited volunteers for the Prayer Cordon and
actively participated in
• Organized pastoral care luncheons on prayer in
April and November, presented by Deborah Hughes.
On-going Care Ministry Carolyn Merriam, leader
• Organized the Senior Member Luncheon on September
25with 75 members attending. After a luncheon prepared
by deacon Susie Jacobs, Deborah Hughes and John Wilkinson
recognized long-time members, and deacons Helen Tiss and
Cecil Buchinger led a hymn sing.
• Arranged and hosted afternoon teas for residents
at Valley Manor, St. John’s Meadows, Cloverwood
and The Highlands. Included members who reside at Wood
Creek at The Highlands’ tea.
• Delivered 45 Easter lilies on Palm Sunday to
members o four church family who were homebound or ill.
• With help from Session members and former deacons,
delivered 50 poinsettias at Christmas to sick or homebound
members.
Memorial Service Receptions Rob White, leader
• Organized and served at approximately 13 memorial
service receptions.
Additional Deacon Activities
• Contributed to the Messenger through the “Deacon’s
Bench” column, coordinated by Hope Herting.
• Held a Saturday training session for new deacons
in January.
• Cleaned and organized the parlor kitchen in February.
• Participated in in-service training sessions
delivered by Deborah Hughes on “Visiting in Hospitals,
Homes, and Care Facilities” in February, “Calling
at Home” in March, and “What Kind of Spiritual
Food Do We Serve?” in October.
• Participated in More Light training delivered
by Rob White.
• Supported the Calling and Caring Ministry, (formerly
the Senior Visitor Program), where members are paired
with shut-ins whom they visit regularly.
• Participated in a workshop for deacons sponsored
by Seniors First at Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church
in October.
• Participated in a joint meeting with the Session
in November.
